After the shocking firing this afternon of FBI Director James Comey by Donald Trump, Republican Congressman Justin Amash (Mich.) tweeted that he is looking into legislation with a goal of establishing an independent commission on Russia.

Here is the tweet:

The second paragraph of the letter to which Amash refers and calls “bizarre” is from Trump’s letter to Comey informing him that he has been fired, which has been released by the White House. Here is the whole letter:

And this is the second paragraph:

While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively let the Bureau.

Most would agree that his paragraph is bizarre, especially in a letter informing you that you have been fired. Essentially, it says: “Because you said nice things to me, I considered not firing you, but in the end that wasn’t enough.”.

To me, it reads like a highly contrived way to make public the personal communications between Trump in Comey. And, no surprise, communications that suggest Trump is innocent in the Trump-Russia investigation. Trump is shamelessly using this letter as yet another means to rewrite the Trump-Russia story, which is clearly trending against him.

With this latest Trump move, the fact that that Trump administration cannot be trusted and an independent commission is needed is obvious to everyone, including the Republican Representative for Michigan’s 3rd congressional district. And it may also prove to be the straw that broke the camel’s back and mark the beginning of the Republican party turning against Trump, with Rep. Amash leading the way.
