Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings is calling former FBI Director James Comey’s memo detailing his conversation with Donald Trump a “smoking gun.” And based on GOP responses to the news that Trump asked Comey to cease and desist from his investigation of Michael Flynn, Cummings’ assertion seems just about right. Here’s some immediate reactions from both sides of the aisle.

Giving congressional reporters the bird …

I just asked @DarrellIssa abt the Comey news and he flicked me off — literally gave me the middle finger — and kept walking. Said nothing

Giving Fox News the dodge …

"We've tried to get Republicans to come out & talk to us & there aren't Republicans willing to go on camera tonight as of yet" @BretBaier

.@RepPeteKing won't commment on NYT report that Trump asked Comey to drop probe of Flynn, says there have been a lot of "misleading reports"

Blaming the victim …

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) re: @nytimes report. "If this happened the FBI director should have done something about it or quit."

Impeachment …

In CNN interview just now, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) uses the I-word — "impeachment" — for the first time.

Obstruction …

At best, Trump has committed a grave abuse of executive power. At worst, he has obstructed justice. We must #ProtectOurDemocracy.

More obstruction …

Just leaving Senate floor. Lots of chatter from Ds and Rs about the exact definition of "obstruction of justice". https://t.co/zXj32i2x8b

Idiocy …

Risch: "It's part of this anti-Trump fervor that the national media has…. This was a good act that he did, not a bad act." #idpol

Gobsmacked…

"Wide-eyed and WTF" is how one GOP lawmaker described his fellow republicans to me on hearing Comey/Flynn news.
