In 2015, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama launched the “Let Girls Learn” program to help find educational opportunities for the 98 million girls worldwide who are not in school.
This interagency initiative builds on decades of USAID efforts to lift girls out of poverty, and empower them to reach their full potential. Through our ongoing education, global health and economic empowerment programs, USAID is reaching girls in every corner of the world. We champion a “whole-of-girl” approach, strengthening our focus on the adolescent girl and taking into account the myriad of challenges girls face in seeking an education.
Apparently Ivanka Trump has once again failed to influence her father on the issue of empowering women because the Trump administration immediately slashed the program:
The Trump administration is discontinuing a signature girls education initiative championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, according to officials.
The “Let Girls Learn” program, which she and President Barack Obama started in 2015 to facilitate educational opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries, will cease operation immediately, according to an internal document obtained by CNN.While aspects of the initiative’s programming will continue, employees have been told to stop using the “Let Girls Learn” name and were told that, as a program unto itself, “Let Girls Learn” was ending.
The announcement came on the same day newly confirmed Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said they would rollback the healthy eating initiative Michelle Obama oversaw in our nation’s public schools:
Perdue was set to unveil a rule change “providing regulatory flexibility for the National School Lunch Program” during a visit to Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg. Like “Let Girls Learn,” improving the nutritional quality of school meals was a major focus of Obama’s during her tenure as first lady.
They are undoing every inch of progress we’ve made. Every. Single. One.
Here’s more on the important “Let Girls Learn” program they are dismantling:
